Kids and Access to Porn Discussed on NPR

porn and kids

The topic of kids and porn was discussed by Culture Reframed President & CEO Dr. Gail Dines on National Public Radio’s “On Point” program on June 17, 2019.

Host Meghna Chakrabarty moderated the discussion, in which Dines addressed questions about the content of the porn kids see, the availability of free porn, and the porn industry’s sophisticated marketing approach (“like any Fortune 500 company”). An excerpt of the audio from Culture Reframed’s new film, “Parent Up! Talk to Your Son About Porn,” was also included on the program.

“The porn industry is the only industry in the world that is above ground, multi-billion-dollar, and completely unregulated,” said Dines.

I just listened to On Point 6/17.
You have always been the most eloquent and authoritative voice on the harms caused by porn, today as ever!
Tragically, this is not, as your host suggested, an old story. That we are raising a generation of men whose main source of sex education will have been violent internet porn is chilling, and grownups should be alarmed, tho you can feel the resistance. Well done!

This was one of the best discussions I’ve listened to on On Point, and that’s saying a lot! Powerful and thought provoking. My husband and I are going to listen together, and discuss how we can approach the topic gently with our utterly trusting, un-self-conscious, beautiful, healthy 8 year old daughter. And self defense classes for her. 🙁 I’m Gen X, and I could not believe how different dating life was for a millennial friend… nightmarish. From anal bleaching and stretching sets of butt plugs to make anal sex less painful for her, everything sounded like a bad porno movie, and it seemed like she felt that it was all totally expected of her. 🙁
